Joyful Noise presents
Music for a Great Space
Saturday, October 27th 4:00PM
St. Justin Church
230 Blue Hills Ave., Hartford, CT
Join Chorus Angelicus, Gaudeamus, and the Batell Brass conducted by artistic director Nicholas White for Music for a Great Space. the program contrasts two very different settings of the Magnificat (The Song of Mary) and the Mass. Monteverdi's Messa da Cappella, written in 1650, displays the composer's trademark virtuosity in a rare work for unaccompanied voices. Nicholas White's Missa Brevis, written in 2002, gives the mass text quite a different treatment adding a counter tenor - Ryland Angel, organ - Riyehee Hong, the Battell Brass, and percussion. The plainsong verses and chordal harmony of 16th century Flemish composer, Orlando Lassus, contrast with the exuberance of White's 1997 setting of Magnificat, colorfully written to include soprano soloist - Amanda Balestrieri, saxophonist - George Sovak, organ, brass and percussion.
